Taking Sketchnotes — Doodling Strictly Permitted

I am not the most enthusiastic social media person and to be honest self-marketing has never been my thing. I have no writing experience but getting to know MEDIUM is part of my current programm. I want to become an UX/UI designer and in order to do so I have to learn a hell of new things. MEDIUM will accompany me and offer me a platform to document my progress. But I am excited to get to know a new side of me. So I put myself out there and see what happens…

one of the first exercises of my UX/UI design program is to practice sketchnote-taking by watching Talks at home or Meetups around your city.

The idea is to take notes in real time (during meetings, conferences, or presentations) in a visual way by letting go of details and focusing on the big ideas and takeaways.
This exercise felt a little awkward at first. I have been doodling all my life, whether I am on the phone or in meetings, but there was always this need to suppress my scribbles not to be thought of as unfocused or chaotic.

To get me in the right mood, I started with a short 5 minute talk by Sunny Brown, known for her large-scale live content visualisations, about doodling itself.
“Doodlers unite!”

It was an eye-opener in many ways.
I found it particularly difficult to find the balance between producing ‘presentable’ notes and active comprehending. Well knowing that this is part of the problem.
It also turned out that very short talks are not so well chosen for the beginning. They are designed to present a lot of important information in a short and crisp way, there is not much time to feel into the topic. I found especially challeging to focus on the big idea without getting caught by the many fascinating details (as you maybe can see). But the talk does its magic and encouraged me to go on.

Just a little Update on sketchnotes
one step further

Finally, I have reached the Ironhack bootcamp and the first week has already flown by. I wish I could invest more time in my sketch skills, but with all the new material we have to learn, time is short. So I decided to make sketch notes related to my lesson and sometimes post them here.
My first update, however, is still a derivative from the pre-bootcamp time I took some sketch notes during a webinar on Design Thinking which was casted by Ironhack on Crowdcast.io.

Since Iteration is an essential part of the Design Thinking I will be back to this article.
